RES Red Ear Syndrome

Hi everyone, I have been a member on and off for a number of years but I'm not too good at posting.  I am a CCH and chronic migraine sufferer for many years, however something changed about 3 months ago.  I started to get these other stabbing pains which I didn't recognise together with a burning ear, I then noticed the alarm clock pattern.  Anyway, I saw Dr Matharu at QS recently and it looks like I now have RES on top of the other 2, I was really embarrassed at first as I thought he would think I was daft but it turns out that he has 6 other patients who have it.  Does anyone else suffer with this?  RES is related to TACs.  It's a full time job trying to keep diaries of everything.  Thanks for reading this.

Angie

HI angie,

I've never heard of RES before, which doesnt help you at all,but I hate to see an unanswered post!

It has made me think though.... I used to get awful deep stabbing pains in my ear alongside the eye pain, and it always felt a bit 'hot'. I just assumed that it was 'part and parcel' so never mentioned it to anyone.  Must admit that it hasnt been so much of a problem since I started having Botox at the pain management clinic.

I've never heard of it either, but I do get a very red ear sometimes with some stabbing pain, I though it was just because I have hearing aids in both ears.  I'll see if there's a pattern!

Hi Angie,

Hmm this is interesting as when my HC swaps sides I get the burning in my ear too with powerful sharp deep pain that can make me jump! Maybe I need to mention it next Neuro visit!

Take care

Liz

This is an interesting thread. Have we discovered a new 'symptom'? Maybe there will be more posts on the subject...

Evening all, now you know why I felt so stupid mentioning it. Mine starts between 5 and 6 pm, the pain isn't bad it's just more annoying because it makes me wince but only for a few seconds, it happens on and off for a couple of hours.  The red ear is really annoying though because it reminds me of when I was a kid and got my ear twisted on a regular basis lol . It feels like my ear and cheek are literally on fire, my ear goes purple and it lasts until I go to bed ..... Then the beast attacks as well .... Oh the joy. 3 diaries is hard to keep though.  It is related more to migraine than CH but I reckon it's all connected by bad wiring lol

The pain you describe sounds like something called idiopathic stabbing [or ice-pick] headache.  short lasting jolts of pain that make you jump.  But I can't find anything that says it is accompanied by reddening of the eare.  I get that checked out if I were you, as if you have IDH you will need a treatment review.
