Nerve block Injection

Hi, I have been invited to try a nerve block injection into the back of my neck, at the Neurology department as anybody had this treatment before ? and if so was it a success or not? from what i understand  it gives  about  3 months of pain relief,  just do not know wether to go ahead or not

Hi David

The GONB [greater occipital nerve block] can give relief for up to three months, but there is no guarantee of how long it will work or if at all.  But it is worth trying, many sufferers have had relief with it and it can give a much needed painbreak for those with long and intense cycles and those that are chronic.  I think most people who have had it done would say give it a go.  I did and got a much needed painfree couple of weeks, but even that short period was a welcome respite and gave me time to recharge!

Good luck.

Val.

Hi David

I had a couple of occipital nerve blocks a couple of months ago. I haven't had any headaches since (hooray!), though I also started on verapamil/prednisone at the same time so I can't be sure which treatment was successful. The injection itself takes a matter of seconds, and I was back out the door after ten minutes. I had a sedative but no painkillers for the injection and that wasn't a problem.

My neck felt a bit stiff for a couple of days, and the back of my head was numb for about a day, but otherwise it was not particularly painful or uncomfortable. Just give it a go and see if it works for you. Even if it doesn't work, it is not much of a faff to try.

I'd echo the "give it a go" message.  I had this and was headache-free for 36 hours ... which was briefly a relief but then a disappointment ... but, yeah, it's not a faff and not painful.

I think there are probably other conversations about this, with more detail, so it is probably worth having a look at older threads.

Hi David, if you are going through a bout of unbearable attacks, then GON injection(s), can be goven to break the cycle. I've had 4 sets of these over time, and they have stopped the intense daily attacks. However, the relief has not been long, from 3 to 5 days for me.
