Sumatriptan as preventative

Hi .
I am a cch sufferer of over 15 years and I also have Suna
I've exhausted nearly all meds .
At present I take keppra at 2grammes twice a day .
Pregabalin 300,100,300
Verapamil 240 three times a day .
Oxygen .
Sumatriptan injections.
My consultant Neurologist, who is a headache specialist has now prescribed 100mg sumatriptan tablet at night as a preventative.
Has anyone used it as a preventative before and has it worked .
Many thanks
Dana

Hi Danaross,

i am an epsidic sufferer and when I start getting attacks at night I take a 50mg tablet just before bed which generally keeps me pain free at night.

It does count towards one of your two sumatriptan doses in 24hours. I use Oxygen at all other times unless I am out. I have also used a  tablet on a long flight and it also works for me.

I understand using Sumatriptan as a preventative has never undergone medical trials and is not a recommended treatment and some neurologist s frown upon it even though for some of us it works.

As you may know a sumatriptan tablet is not effective as an abortive as it takes too long to be absorbed into the blood stream although some ill informed medical professionals prescribe it , nothing to do with it being cheap I am sure!

Regards

John

Hi John .
Thanks for that ,its 100mg sumatriptan tablet before bed as my attacks are mostly at night ,one is always at 01.30 so its to try to help stop this one .
It is also as a add on to the two sumatriptan injections which I did question but he says it amounts to a small increase and hes happy with prescribing it .
I have tried it for two nights so far .
First night no success but the second night was better .
Fingers crossed it works tonight.
Thank you

Danaross

Omg just want to warn you about pregablin

I've been taking it for two years now - I now have kidney disease and a fatty liver--

I am seriously Ill with the withdrawal from pregab!in -it's been two months now , and no help out there .Also along with my permanent headache my life is pretty miserab!e at the moment and then on top of that I have the worry on how bad my kidneys are - waiting on a biopsy

I've tried sumatriptan injections did not work for me

I came back on this forum t o see if anyone had rep!did to my post - given any advice etc -unfortunately No---- then I saw your post

Just want to warn people about this horrible drug - research it, so many people have not a good word  about it

As soon as I was diagnosed with kidney disease - my headache specialist told me to come off pregablin and go on to duloxetine , which controls my Ice pick - stabbing episodes but unfortunately not the permanent headache -- perhaps this drug might help you ?

Hope this helps
