Volunteer with us

OUCH (UK), is run by sufferers and supporters, for sufferers and supporters. We rely entirely on the dedication of our volunteers to provide vital support and information to the Cluster Headache community. Whether you have a few hours a month or want to take on a more regular role, your skills can make a life-changing difference.

Current Roles

We are always looking for keen individuals to join our team.  Areas where we need support include:

  • Advice Line: the heart of our charity. You will provide a listening ear and practical advice to those in need.
  • Online Forum and social media:  supporting our users online
  • Events management: organising our conferences and meetings
  • Awareness and PR:  raising the public profile of Cluster Headache
  • Content management:  helping with publications, website, YouTube and social media content
  • Fundraising Coordinators:  supporting our community of amazing fundraisers with their events and initiatives
  • Administrative support:  maintaining our charity records
  • Technical support:   helping to maintain our digital infrastructure.

Benefits of Volunteering

  • Make a real Impact: directly support people living with one of the most painful conditions known to medical science.
  • Be part of a community: join a supportive team of people who truly understand the challenges of Cluster Headache.
  • Skill development: gain experience in charity administration, crisis support, or professional communications.
  • Flexible commitment: most of our roles can be done remotely from the comfort of your home.

What to Expect

When you volunteer with OUCH (UK), you become part of a close-knit "family."  You can expect a welcoming environment where your lived experience is valued.  Most roles are remote, meaning you can contribute regardless of where you are in the UK.  We communicate regularly via email and online meetings to ensure everyone feels supported and connected to the charity’s goals.

Training & Support

We don’t expect you to have all the answers from day one.

  • Induction:  Volunteers receive an introduction to the charity’s history and mission.
  • Specialist training:  Our Advice Line volunteers go through a comprehensive training scheme to ensure they can provide accurate, safe, and empathetic support.
  • Ongoing mentorship:  You will have access to experienced trustees and long-term volunteers for guidance and support whenever you need it.

Volunteer Stories

"I joined OUCH in 2003 as an advice line volunteer after years of suffering in silence. Taking that first call and knowing I could help someone navigate their treatment was a turning point for me. Today, I’m a Trustee, but that connection to the community remains the most rewarding part of the job." — Val, long-term volunteer & trustee

Rachael joined OUCH (UK) in 2020 after her son’s diagnosis of Chronic Cluster Headache at age 11.  She is keen to help other parents and children navigate their way through a Cluster Headache diagnosis and to assist with practical advice and support for families living with Cluster Headache.

Ben is an engineer who suffers from Cluster Headache.  In typical engineer fashion, he tried to fix it himself, but then fortunately found OUCH(UK), who helped guide him so that he could live a fairly normal life.  Ben joined the Advice Line in 2025, hoping to help others deal with their pain.

Audrey was diagnosed with Episodic Cluster Headache in 2009 and has been a member of OUCH (UK) since 2011.  Audrey made a call to the OUCH (UK) Advice Line, and through that one call and subsequent emails, she was able to get the right treatment to manage her Cluster Headache effectively.  She has been volunteering on the Advice Line and helping with the charity’s administration.

Originally from Portugal, Pedro has called London home since 2011.  Living with Episodic Cluster Headaches since 2019 inspired him to get involved with OUCH (UK) after attending the 2024 summer conference.  He now volunteers as Deputy Advice Line Manager to support fellow sufferers.  Pedro lends a hand with social media and other areas of the charity too, always keen to help raise awareness and support the community.
