Verapamil/Indometacin

I have recently started on Indometacin as a treatment - is it normal to stay on yVerapamil at the same time ,currently on 800mg per day.

It rather depends what you are suffering from. If its Cluster Headache, Indometacin is very, very unlikely to help the attacks and is not usually prescribed. If you have been diagnosed with Hemicrania Continua it will stop the attacks. Have you had a definitive diagnosis?

doing trial to see if I have paraxmsyl hemicrania - started Indometician last week ( major improvement in the frequency and severity of headaches while not completly gone). Is that a good sign and should I continue taking the Verapamil?

Well if you don't stop the Verapamil it will be difficult to know which drug is helping you. Usually the specialist will take you off one drug to test the other. It certainly seems that the Indo is helping, however it also could be the Verapamil as it takes some weeks to become effective, how long have you been on it?

Hi Mike,

Have been on Veraparmil for over 10 months and no significant improvement with headaches. with consultation with my GP have started to gradually reduce dosage to eventually to stop on a phased basis. Hopefully the Indometician is effective even thogh still getting some albeit reduced number of headaches. Is that normal or should the Indimetician totally eliminate the headaches, does it need time to work?

Thanks

Gay

Gay, if you suffer from paroxysmal hemicrania and take Indomethacin the effect should be "absolute." If you have Custer Headache, Indomethacin wont work. Also please check your Verapamil to make sure you are using the correct version. You need the BP (British Pharmaceutical) version. Check the package to see if you have been given SR (slow realease) or MR (Modified Realease) they probalbly wont work.

Have you been diagnosed by a "proper" neurologist?

I was diagnosed by 2 Neurologists with Clustered Headaches and have a pending appointment next month. I appear to tick all the boxes for Paroxymal Hemicrania and in Consultation with my GP started a trial with Indometician which has resulted in signicant improvement. I am in the process of coming off the Verapermil. My main question is if the Indometician has an immediate absolute impact, does it take a period of time to work? I am on the medication almost 2 weeks so should the headaches be completly  stopped by now and if i'm still getting some headaches is the Indometician not working and I am unlikely to have Paroxymal Hemicrania?

Sorry, no definitive answer. It could take a "few" weeks. I would give it up[ to six. If it doesnt work it is likely that you dont have PH.
