I'm having trouble getting injectable sumatriptan from my doctor owing to cost. I do have some old refills that expired in November of last year.

What are the risks if inject one of those: is it just that the active chemical has decomposed and won't work, or something more sinister? Anyone have experience of this?

Hi,

I have used expired Sumatriptan injections for many years as I don't like waste. Some have been over 2 years old. All have worked as usual which is what your article infers.

As to withholding this medication on the grounds of cost that is strictly a no no. Take it up with your practice manager in the first instance.

Thanks John. It's not that they won't issue the scripts it's just that they only give me 6 doses, which is only 3 days....and it takes 3 days to get a repeat prescription authorised so I'm always chasing the surgery
