Any Positive reviews of Lithium?

Having had little sucess with the 'standard' treatments,my neuro now wants me to try Lithium ("I dont prescribe this lightly"), and  then reeled off the terrifying list of posible side effects. I've had a scout through previous  posts on the subject, none of which inspire much confidence.I'm quite nervous about the prospect. My friends seem to think that it will make me glow in the dark like the ReadyBrek kid, and I will be able to recharge a laptop simply by the power of Mesmerism ! enlightened

So, is anyone using this drug, not having any problems, and finding it helpful ?

I've only come across one or two sufferers who have benefited from lithium as a preventive.  It has a bad press because everyone knows it is an anti-psychotic.  It didn't work for me at all, but I had no bad reaction to it.  You will need regular blood tests to monitor your blood lithium level and from that level the dose is adjusted; there is no set regime for CH prevention.  And you would need to carry a card stating the name of the particular lithium you are on, in case of accident so that medical attendants can factor in you are on lithium.

Sorry I don't have more definitive information for you.

Thanks Val,

As this post has had no more responses, I guess that there are " no positive reviews of Lithium"!!

Hi

I have just been prescribed lithium in the hope it can give me a well needed break. From what I've read it's definitely not a long term option due to side affects. What other options have you tried if you not mind me asking?

Gamma Core? Verapamil? Tipiramate? Nerve Blocker?

Hellooo!

I havent started the Lithium yet. I have a 5-week wait for an appointment with my GP to have all the preliminary tests done first. (yes, you read that correctly- five weeks)!  I'm not happy at the prospect of using the stuff, but I'm in last chance saloon with my current neuro. Its a case of try this and if it doesnt help, he will refer me onto someone else! I'm not on anything at the moment having had to detox in preparation!

So, I have actually been CCH for about 10 years, but only recently gotten the 'official' diagnosis. ( having touched on migraine, sinus, bad teeth, neuralgia and  hysterical old woman on the way..)! I have worked my way through the National Formulary over the years and nothing has really helped at all, or has helped with intolerable side-effects.I presented a list of 26 ineffective drugs to my neuro last month - and they are the ones I can remember taking. So things like Verapimil, Candesartan, Lyrica, Epilim, Tramadol, Gabapentin, Atenolol, Prednisolone, Indomthacin, Nortriptyline, variations on Sumatriptan, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, massive doses of asprin, antidepressants, Topiramate. I was 'off my face' on most of them haha! Wacko   I've had a GONB which made things worse for a while. The most effective treatment seems to be good old O2, which aborts or reduces the pain if I manage to get the mask on right at the first twinge. I also have 3-monthly Botox which does seem to have reduced the intensity of the Ice-pick pains that I get.

I realise that this looks like a litany of disaster, but this is just me. Other people have great results, so anyone reading this should not be disheartened.!!!

Do let me know how you get on with the Lithium!
