Botox treatment

Hi,
My neuro has suggested the next course of action for the CDH and further control of the CCH is botox therapy,
I have looked it up a little and it seems it gives little relief or makes the headaches worse. Has anyone had relief from this treatment? I am willing to try anything but don't want to end up in more pain.
Thanks

Not heard of anyone with CH who has benefited from Botox therapy, it'll give you a nice smooth forehead  but that's about all.

Suggest you call the helpline and chat about the treatments you have tried and discuss what other treatments might help.

I have botox. A lot of botox (21 injections)! It's not a painful procedure, I have it every three months for the last three years. The first time, I felt a bit unwell and headachey, but that doesn't happen now.
I find that it helps, particularly with the stabbing pain. For me, it doesn't cure cch, but some symptoms are alleviated, which is a blessing. I know when its wearing off! A side effect is an unfurrowed brow, which makes me look less miserable about the condition. I really had to fight to get it on the NHS (spent a fortune having it done privately), so if your neuro is offering it I'd say give it a go.

Thanks both,

MissKittyB is that 21 injections in 1 session? I am kind of worried about having a stiff forehead, the no wrinkles doesn't really appeal to me, but if it could give me some relief I will definately give it a go.

Thankfully I have good insurance with my work so I am being seen privately, I saw an NHS Neuro who was not very helpful, I fear I would still be awaiting a diagnosis had I relied on the NHS.

Thanks for your replies

Hi Maggs,

Yes 21 in one go! It takes about 5 minutes- my consultant is an expert! I have them in all the 'triggerpoints', - forehead, that nasty throbbing temple, top of the head, around the base of the skull and into the neck. Its just a light prick of the skin so not like having an injection and not painful, but can be mildly  uncomfortable if one of the points is tender. Doctors inject different areas to cosmeticians, so you wont end up looking like a wierd B-List Celebrity!

My experience was that the first few times, I did have a very odd and heavy feeling in the forehead (felt like I had a Neanderthal brow- which I didn't, it looked perfectly normal) which made me wonder why anyone would have to have the procedure for cosmetic reasons! However, after a few sesions this sensation stopped completely- maybe the muscles have gotten used to being relaxed. For me it lasts about 8 weeks and then gradually wears off. My last appointment was rescheduled by the hospital so I was 2 months 'overdue' and I really could tell. Sometimes I feel a bit 'fluey' a couple of days later. I had a couple of sessions to determine the efficacy and then the NHS agreed that it was beneficial.

So the good thing is that if you dont get on with it, then you arent stuck with it. I wouldnt want to go without it now!

Hope this helps

"Happy to Help" Pleasantry!!

I'never thought about it until now, as I wear a fringe, but I've just stood infront of the mirror and tried to wiggle my eyebrows. I'm pleased to report that they DO move!

Let us know how you get on.

I should have qualified my remarks by saying in CH it generally h as no effect, but of course there are other TACs where a patient will find they are relieved by botox, sorry about that, must learn not to be so flippin' pedantic!

Botox usually helps tension headache the most (one of the encyclopaedia I suffer from)...

I have migraine, tension and cch.... I've had most treatments including things in my brain (they had a job finding it)...

Botox works well for many people... try it if offered... I just got a stupid face and a bad migraine for a solid 10 days (trial treatments have been worse)

Acupuncture is also good... mine was contracted to the local chinese practicioner... very relaxing but didn't help me, but I didn't get a bad reaction.. which was a bessing......... they gave standard acupuncture and also needles with little burning ends (really nice)

don't knock it until you've tried it
