Consider Primary Thunderclap Headache

Primary Thunderclap Headache

Primary thunderclap headache (PTH) involves explosive pain that is severe and of sudden onset reaching maximum intensity in less than one minute. The pain can last between 1 hour and ten days.

The headache may recur within the first week after onset, but does not recur regularly over subsequent weeks or months.

The symptoms of PSH can occur with other types of headache, so a magnetic resonance image (MRI) scan of the brain, together with other investigations, are often recommended as good screening investigations to help rule out any possible secondary causes.

If this brief description does not match your headache type, consider Tension Type Headache and/or Hemicrania Continua.

Treatment

Primary thunderclap headache (PTH) is a self-limiting syndrome; therefore no treatment is recommended other than simple analgesics.
