To all Trustees and Helpliners Advice on giving advice needed

Hi all,

Today on the facebook page there was a post about frovatriptan and a sufferer being put on a trial for two weeks of taking it every night to see if it would cut out the night time attacks so far so good, it then goes on to state that the sufferer would be allowed one sumatriptan injection per day to my knowledge the mixing of triptans is contraindicated also both patient information leaflets state not to mix triptans within 24 hours,I messaged a trustee for their take on it as they had commented on the post, the reply was that even as its contra indicated as a neurologist has said its ok and that means that they couldn't tell the person about the contraindication. I would like to know if it is OUCH policy not to question such issues or state that there is a contraindication just because a neurologist has ok'd it ? Does this mean that we are to presume that the neurologist has checked or has knowledge of this issue or that they are quasi omnipotent and know everything about all medicines?

thanks in advance

Ian

Hi Ian,

Up to now advice given to sufferers has been that if an injection of sumatriptan is needed during the 24 hours after taking Frovatriptan that this is ok, as long as they take no more than 2 triptans in a 24 hour period.  Thank you for raising this, I have read the information leaflets and am seeking further advice on this matter, and will come back here with our findings.

Hi Liz

thanks for the reply but not actually what i was seeking advice on ... I am more concerned that i was told today by a trustee that if a neuro has said it that its not to be questioned and i quote '

I know both of those things but we can't tell people to take medications against what their neuro has told them.

this was the reply to my question of shouldn't we say about the contraindication risk , my point is that surely we must as the people giving advice inform people of the risk as the Neurologist concerned may not know that it is contraindicated by both manufacturers, they may not even have checked due to being busy etc

Ian,

until we have a reply from our neurologists I am locking the tread.

I understand your concerns. I also understand and accept the position regarding the advice given to a fully assessed patient by their specialist.

We will come back to you as soon as our medical experts have given their opinions.

regards

scott
