PRUDENTIAL RIDE LONDON-SURREY 100

Chronic cluster headache sufferer and OUCH member, Graeme Brightmore will soon be riding with a team of friends in the upcoming Ride London 100 mile cycling event. Graeme and his ‘OUCH(UK) team (James, Lucy, Chris and Steve) will also be competing against other charity and business teams in the ‘Amstel Ride Together’ team event that runs in conjunction with the ride. The team hope to raise at least £750 for OUCH and with their specially designed Team OUCH-UK jerseys, hope to raise awareness of our charity and cluster headaches over the Ride London weekend. They’ve been racking up the training miles for quite a few months now and are hoping to finish in the top half of the teams participating in the ‘Ride Together’ event.

Watch this space for a team photo.

All entry, transport and accommodation cost have been paid for by the team members. So, every penny will go towards OUCH and the vital services we provide. To donate see the link below:

Fantastic!  Great looking team - love the shirts.  Is there likely to be any TV coverage?

Go Team!

Hi Val.

There is usually a half hour (maybe full hour) programme on BBC1 covering the amateur sportive event. They tend to do an overview of it and interview celebs and random participants, usually those who are raising money for a good cause. A bit like the London marathon coverage. Suffice to say that the chances of getting some coverage is very slim due to the fact that 20,000+ take part. However, we shall try and are planning to cross the line in some style (all side by side, sat up pointing at the OUCH logo) to attract the camera’s. So you never know! There may also show some clips during the later coverage of the Pro event that takes place on the same day.

I was thinking of calling the Simon Mayo All Request Friday show on Radio 2 to see if I can get some additional publicity. However, I seriously hate hearing my voice on anything, am fiercely private and like to keep my head down in life (doing the team photo with me in it was stressful enough!!!). So, I don’t think that I will pluck up the courage. If anybody on the forum fancies giving them a call on our behalf, then please let me know. I think it would make a great story and be a good chance to raise awareness of cluster headaches and OUCH. It could be a ‘sending good luck’ call to ‘Team OUCH UK’ and the song requested could be he ‘Tour de France’ song by Kraftwork. It’s the type of song request they would like on the show and given that the TDF ends this week, it could be a winner!

Anyhow, just to let folk know our start time on Sunday is 6.16am from Stratford and barring a crash or puncture, we should finish on the Mall around 11.16am to 11.45am. So, if anyone is in the area then feel free to give us a wave. Also, there is a link to the route below. So, if anyone lives along the route then the same applies!

Oh no Graeme, I just saw this, otherwise I would have rang Simon Mayo. If our team isn't picked out I'll be amazed, especially if the finish happens like that! You're a fine looking team. I'll share the route link to Facebook and Twitter. Good luck!!!

Hi Dorothy

No problem at all. We got around OK but the weather was absolutely terrible, causing lots of accidents, puctures, breakdowns for lots of the participants and there were ambulances and stoppages all around the course. I had my first ever high speed crash around the 40 mile mark, but myself and more importantly the bike were fine so all was good. Mentally, one of the hardest six hours on a bike I've ever had and it was the same for the rest of the team. The last 25 miles were great though, as we started to dry out and just enjoyed the atmosphere. We crossed the line side by side in style, so we should be able to get a great photo from the official photographer when available.

I'm just about to email you some images from the start, finish and a couple that a friend took in Kingston about 20 miles in before all the rain seriously came down and carnage started! I'll post a bit of a 'write up' on here in the next few days.

Super proud of all the team and we should easily pass the £1000 mark in the next week as there is more money to come. A massive thanks to all those who have contributed on here.

Regards

Graeme

Graeme, that's fantastic, thank you so very much from all of us! I was bursting with pride all day yesterday at the mental image of the team powering along at high speed wearing our name on your chests and I was biting my fingers at the thought of any mishaps and you did have a high speed crash! I can't wait to see the official photos but can't resist putting the ones you sent me on here, for a taster. I'll just jump onto the laptop to do that....

Again a MASSIVE thank you to all of the team. Heroes all!

You can still support this super event here folks: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROFundraiserPage...

Well done DD Team OUCH!  In awe of what you a have done for OUCH and the weather wasn't too kind to you either.  Thank you so, so much for what you have done and for the £1,000 or so that you have raised.

Go Team!

Graeme,

many thanks to you and the rest of the team for your strenuous efforts. It's a pity I didn't have more notice,or I I would have joined you.-- Actually,I felt tired just reading what you had been through.

Hi Everyone!

Massive thanks to all that have contributed to the fundraising and for your kind words of support on here and on Twitter/Facebook. A couple of the team members still have their ‘face to face’ sponsorship donations to add to the total, so we are hoping to reach £1150 - £1200 (without Gift Aid!) in the next few weeks. It has certainly made the whole experience incredibly worthwhile and despite the atrocious weather, freezing cold puncture repair and my crash, I couldn’t be happier about the whole event and money raised. We did all cross the finish line on The Mall side by side with our OUCH jerseys fully on show, but for some reason the official photographers managed to miss us! Shame really as I would have been so proud to have got that picture.

My head also did its part to help during the weekend. Two ‘mild-ish’ attacks Friday, same on Saturday, both aborted by sugar free energy drinks. But most of all, no headaches at all on the day of the ride! I was a bit worried with the 3.30am get up, as disturbed sleep is a potent trigger for me (like many of us). But the Imigran remained stashed away in one of my rear pockets and never saw the light of day! Though to be fair, I’m generally fine whilst exercising . . . . . as a general rule.

Anyhow, thanks once gain to everyone for your support.

Kind regards

Graeme

Graeme, the photos you already shared with us are awesome and we can picture you in our heads going across the line together. What an achievement and how kind of the beast not to hassle you on the way, I'm so glad the Imigran stayed in your pocket! A thousand thank yous to the whole team for taking on this gruelling challenge for us and to all the people who donated to the event. It's a massive help to us and we are very grateful for every penny raised. It was my pleasure liaising with you leading up to it and very exciting on the day of the ride.

All the very best to you all!

Dorothy
