Melatonin Supplies?

Urgent advice please, someone's GP has just said he cannot find how to renew a prescription for Melatonin 3mg or 5mg ordinary capsule. He says there is only 2mg slow release, the 3mg and 5mg capsules are no longer available.

Does anyone know anything at all about this? Is it even correct?

Harriet.

Morning Harriet.....When I took Melatonin the only ones available were the 2mg slow release tablets....Melatonin is one of those drugs which seems difficult to first of all get prescribed then everyone seems to struggle to get hold of the correct dose.

hello everyone thanks for replies, the original problem was for me, but being away from H/A could not log on by smartphone as could not remember login details [chrome does it on auto on home computer]

At our local surgery gp suddenly left, new dr cannot find in the BNF system 3mg or 5mg capsules to prescribe only 2mg slow release so is not sure if these are ok as prev ones did not say slow release.

The hosp consultant is on holiday at present so unable to ask him for advice.

Do not want to loose melatonin as it helps so much with the bad cluster I used to get shortley after going to bed, bad later clusters in the night still break through but not as often.

To be honest i never used to trust ebay but would choose them over amazon and you would be surprised what both sites sell some of it is quite legit and melatonin is not freely available here unless you go through a neuro hope you have luck in getting a prescription but as a last resort there is ebay who do have the 3mg and 5mg make sure you choose the buy now option though and not the bids

Hi,

Coming on this a bit late, but I used to be on the 3mg tablets. I stopped them a while ago, as they didn't help much for dialling out the night time attacks of my CPH, but Prof Goadsby suggested a re-try and a gradual increase, and my GP says the 2mg are the only ones.

When I had the 3mg my Pharmacy had a hard time getting them (about 12 months ago)

I was told originally it needed to be ordinary release, not gradual release.

Hope this helps

all sorted now boots has the prescription for my normal 3mg capsules. the 3mg are unlicensed and are a named script order [the chemist can only order them in for the named person they cannot be issued to anyone else] The new gp had not come across this and too a while check the procedure.

[takes boots about a week to get supplies in]

thank you to liz on the help line, harriet and anyone else that replied.

Mike, did you ask your GP if he could prescribe melatonin before you bought it?  My GP prescribed melatonin when I took it.
